THE ROLE
Reporting to the CEO, the principal legal officer (PLO) is a key executive leadership position with responsibility for leading the effective delivery of legal services across the Northern Territory and supporting the CEO in the strategic leadership and management of the organisation. Under the direction of the CEO, the PLO is responsible for ensuring that the legal practice meets all statutory and funding requirements whilst also aligning with the organisation’s strategic and operational plans. The PLO is also required to maintain a case load of complex and serious legal matters, including representing NAAJA and its clients in Northern Territory courts.

REQUIREMENTS
If you have admission (or eligibility for admission) as a legal practitioner in the Northern Territory and the holder of (or eligibility for) an unrestricted practicing certificate, in addition to extensive experience in areas relevant to NAAJA’s legal practice, including as an advocate in superior courts, we would be interested to hear from you. Demonstrated management skills and the ability to provide effective leadership to a diverse team of legal and non-legal staff will be essential, as will an understanding of the barriers faced by Aboriginal people in the justice system and a demonstrated empathy and sensitivity to Aboriginal people, history and culture.

THE PACKAGE
A three to five year contract is on offer and a competitive remuneration package of $250,000 plus super, six weeks annual leave and the opportunity to salary sacrifice.
