The Client

The City of Karratha is a vibrant and progressive local government at the heart of Western Australia’s Pilbara region. With world-class facilities, a strong sense of community and significant investment driving growth, the City is building a sustainable and liveable regional centre that people are proud to call home.

Working with the City means being part of a forward-thinking organisation that values collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement. You’ll enjoy a supportive environment, modern infrastructure, and an enviable lifestyle surrounded by some of the most spectacular landscapes in Australia.

The Role

Reporting to the Director Development Services, this leadership position oversees the City’s statutory and strategic planning functions and drives high-quality planning outcomes for our growing community.

Responsibilities include:
  • Provide expert advice to Council, the Executive team and stakeholders, ensuring alignment with local and state planning frameworks and supporting the City’s long-term growth strategy.
  • Manage a talented team delivering development assessment, scheme amendments, strategic planning projects, and land tenure activities.
  • Guide the City’s approach to Aboriginal heritage engagement and foster strong partnerships with government agencies, developers and the community.
  • Represent the City in high-level negotiations with developers, government agencies, and industry bodies.
  • Ensure financial and risk management practices are in place to deliver cost-effective, compliant, and quality planning outcomes.
  • This is an opportunity to shape the future of one of WA’s most exciting regional cities while balancing strategic direction with hands-on leadership.
Requirements

This role would suit an experienced planning leader who combines strong technical knowledge with strategic vision and collaborative leadership. With extensive experience in both statutory and strategic planning, you can manage complexity, build effective relationships and deliver clear, practical outcomes.

Candidates will ideally demonstrate the following:
  • A tertiary qualification in Urban and Regional Planning (or related discipline)
  • Eligibility for membership with the Planning Institute of Australia
  • Demonstrated experience in planning leadership within local government or similar environments
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills
  • A proactive, solutions-focused approach and commitment to innovation and improvement
In Return

In return, you’ll join a dynamic, supportive organisation offering an attractive remuneration package including housing, vehicle, relocation allowance, professional development opportunities and the chance to contribute meaningfully to a growing regional city.

Applications for this role will close on the 14th of November at 4pm AWST
